Daily Prompt: Litmus, Litmus on the Wall

Daily Prompt: Litmus, Litmus on the Wall

If you had to come up with one question, the answer to which would determine whether or not you could be friends with a person you’ve just met, what would it be? What would the right answer be?

He seemed like a nice enough guy. He had been flirting shamelessly with me for the last half hour or so. He was obviously interested.

I bought him a drink.

He asked my sign.

“Capricorn. Yours?”

“Taurus,” he says.

He takes my hand and turns it, as if to read the lines etched there. Peering closely, his thumb makes lazy circles on my palm. “It appears as though you are about to embark on a romantic adventure,” his eyes lock with mine.

“Maybe so, but there is one thing I need to know before I go anywhere.”

“Anything,” he purrs.

I stood and backed up two steps. I knew he was mine if I wanted him. Turning I asked, “Does my butt look big in these jeans?”

I heard silence by way of reply. I glanced over my shoulder and saw a picture of confusion. Stumbling and stuttering he finally said, “N n no, of course not.”

“Sorry Charlie, too slow.” I hooked my bag from the back of my chair and walked out the door alone. I never looked back.
