R&R on Lockhart Street

-for the July 1: Flash Fiction Challenge

He finished his drink and beckoned to Meihui.
“You want another, Danny?” she smiled.
“No, baby, I’m gonna go home. I’ll see you later.”
She rose up on her toes and leaned over the counter
to give him a quick kiss on the lips.
He dropped
a handful of coloured bills on the bar.
She pushed them back and quickly moved away.
Outside, standing on the pavement in the light rain
Dan snapped a quick shot of a fire engine
Lights flashing.
Now, fifty years later,
it was the closest thing to a photo of her that he had.

The prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about “the old photograph.” What is captivating about it? Where did it come from? How does it incite a story? Go where the prompt leads!

    1. I like this! I like the way that photos, a stray word, an overheard conversation, or something like that can spark memories and draw out emotion.

  1. Ooh, good to see you at the ‘Ranch’. – I have too many old photos that I was trying to get my MIL to ID, before she passed. Once she told me they made her sad (she being in her 90’s at the time) – I stopped asking.

I like where you went. 😀

  2. HA! Opened a local news website at lunch and the lead title read: BAR SEATING IS BACK, AND SO ARE GRUMPY CUSTOMERS. Immediately thought of all the barflies that have inhabited your many stories 🙂

  4. I like how your photo was not of the memory itself, but rather a reminder and despite that, it’s deeply connected to the subject. Similar to how we cling to fading memories, whatever scents or colours we can remember. Whatever we can do to keep the memory strong. Unique take on the prompt, a powerful perspective of photos and the impact they have on us. Great writing!
