OLWG#127- Kahlua, Baileys, and Vodka

 Written for OLWG#127

Linda Lou played in the brass section for The Harvey Shine Band. They were seventeen strong. They played ‘Big Band’ music like what used to be played by Benny Goodman, Count Basie, The Dorsey Brothers, and the like. They played a lot of casinos and dance halls. Tonight was Circus Circus in Deadwood and she was a little nervous. Tommy had told them that the man from Capitol Records was going to be in the audience and that if he liked what he heard there would be a recording contract in the works. Linda Lou wanted a drink almost as much as she wanted a recording contract.

Backstage she changed into her costume. All the girls in the band wore shiny blue bikinis. The blokes wore Bermuda shorts and waistcoats made from the same material as the girl’s bikinis. The boys wore black patent leather, plain toe opera shoes with pearl buttoned spats, four up the side. The girls had six-inch patent stiletto pumps with ankle straps, also in black. They were planning to play Moonlight Serenade. It was heavy on the trombone bits and, had been Glenn Miller’s signature song.

Linda Lou still wanted a drink so before going on stage. She made her way through the crowd to the bar. “Jimmy,” she asked in her heels and swimsuit; slide trombone in hand, “can you make me a Tahoe Mud on the rocks?” He nodded and then she changed her mind, “No, Jimmy – make it a double, wouldja?”

The prompts were:

  1. a shiny blue bikini
  2. slide trombone
  3. Tahoe mud
