Daily Prompt: Going Obsolete

Daily Prompt: Going Obsolete

Of all the technologies that have gone extinct in your lifetime, which one do you miss the most?

Police Constable Evans had been watching the old man in the park for about an hour. He seemed to be lost,  wandering aimlessly to and fro through the paths. He didn’t seem to be bothering anyone but Evans was concerned. The man might have dementia, he might be lost.

“Pardon me sir,” Evans approached the elderly gentleman. “May I assist you? You appear to be looking for something.”

“Looking for something?” parroted back the geezer. “What are you looking for? I’ve lived around here for over 90 years. I can generally point you in the right direction.”

“No sir,” said the constable. “You seem to be looking for something. I was offering to help you.”

“Oh, sorry, I misunderstood. I am looking for something. I’m looking for the time. I’m supposed to meet my old dad and grandfather here today at half one. We are going to pop over to the Royal Oak for a couple of pints and a game of darts. I think they’re late but it seems as though the sundial has been relocated. It used to be over by the roses there.” He pointed vaguely towards the east.

The constable dipped his hand into his trouser pocket and removed his pocket watch. Popping the cover open he glanced down at the watch, “No sir, they’re not late yet. It’s only quarter past.”

“What? How do you know that?”

“My watch, sir.”

“That little thing tells you the time?”

“Indeed it does.”

“What will they think of next?” the old man shook his head. “At this rate there’ll be no need of sundials soon!”
